Well...What Kind of Benefits Do They Have?

I have not kept it secret that our family is struggling financially. My husband and I have both been in the mortgage business since college. It's all we've ever known professionally. Maybe you haven't heard, but the mortgage industry isn't doing so hot. Oh, you already knew that? My bad.

When the market took a turn for the worse, I left my role as stay-at-home-mom and jumped in to help out. I took a part-time job as a teacher's aide, I sell stuff on e-bay, and I have this here blog. Altogether, that brings in about $2.56 a month.

So, I have spent the past few days looking at employment boards, though I must admit...the last time I had to send out a resume there was no internet. I know the system of applying for jobs online is supposed to be efficient, which is why I have no idea why it takes me forever.

But today, my third day at it, I managed to get through the process more effectively and I was feeling pretty proud of myself when I smiled at my daughter and said, "I did a good job today! I sent in resumes for eight different positions!"

She said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you! There's a place across from my school that's hiring!"

I asked, "Really? How do you know that?"

She replied, "Because there was a guy standing out front, dressed like a hot dog, holding up a sign."

I can has free hot dogs?

BTW - I don't normally talk in LOLspeak. Kind of creeps me out.

Damn you! I just got the kids back to sleep. Now they want to know why I'm laughing so hard.

Too funny!

I will be praying for your financial stability to come back in line.

So sorry the mortgage industry took you down when it also went down :(

I'll take my dog with mustard and kraut! ;)

I've truly considered taking up the guy at Little Ceasars dressed up in a puffy Ceasar costume walking along the street- since his head is covered- complete anonimity- and warmth!

mmm...hot dogs...

Hot dogs...mmm...what kind?

Better than the Taco Lady in the mobile phone commercial (Hola!) I suppose! Funny stuff.

(And thinking good thoughts for you with the financial stuff).

Love it when they are helpful.

Lol--my husband is a real estate agent, I share your struggle ;)

My Hubby has been very lucky. He is in the mortgage business as well so I can totally relate. The company he worked for got sold but they kept him on. He has been there for 12 years and it seems like we are always knocking on wood that he is still employed. Tough times right now.

I used to sell on EBAY just quit earlier this year. I did not like all the changes.

I hope you find something soon.

Oh, man, your daughter has high hopes for you. lol

Wow, looks like someone wants a hot dog! Good luck with your search.

The other question is, are they hiring to replace the guy in the suit? :)

I hope things turn around for you very, very soon! :)

OMGosh that's funny. The hot dog thing...not the needing a job thing.

Are you qualified to wear the hot dog? Do you have past experience?

I hear you on the $2 a month. I think I'm averaging $100/month, but not much difference!:) I'm also on the job search now and am crossing my fingers for you. The internet for job searching is great, but the real power comes from combining it with personal networking.

Oh, man.

But, I'm cracking up at envisioning you dressed up as a hot dog.

This may be worth checking out:

sometimes those hot dog jobs look pretty good, ya know?

She clearly wants to be the cool kid in her class whose mommy wears a hot dog to work.

I can totally relate.

You might want to snap that job up, for serious. It's getting harder and harder to find the better paying stuff. My husband's company is looking at laying off half his team, and they START at $16 just to answer phones. Look at it this way, if you find something better, you can quit the hotdog job. However, you might end up liking it. One of the things I used to enjoy about fast food jobs is that they are very flexible, some of them do have free food as a benefit which helps with your grocery bill at home if you're getting free lunch, and if you hate it, you can quit with very little remorse. Plus it's across from your daughter's school, so maybe that would work out for picking her up after school or something. I would do it in a minute, but I like hot dogs.

Hmmm... the money-related industries fluctuate with the economy, but everybody always needs food. Maybe they're on to something. I'm in the wrong business.

Dang it...now I'm hungry! Good luck on the job search!

I clicked on the Ann Taylor ad in solidarity with my fellow mom, hoping it helped.

that is too funny! Desperate times call for desperate measures, right?
I can't imagine having my baby right now...that is so tiny! Thanks for your comment!

You would be one hot mama ;-) Now I have 'hot dog hot dog hot diggity dog' running through my head.

Sorry about the finances but damn girl ;-) Thanks for the giggle.

Don't be such a weenie!

I wonder what kind of benefits they would have too! Ha ha ha ha.

Please make my hotdog with yellow mustard and saurkraut. Thanks in advance.

I'm there with you. My husband and I are both in real estate and mortgage. We closed up our office, now working from home. I am doing some substitute teaching.

It's been good though. We now know what we really value - God and family, not plasma TV and fancy restaurants.

God bless you.

Do you get to wear the hot dog costume? Suh-weet!

If it's Hotdog on a Stick then I'm going to have to insist on seeing a pic of you in the hat.

nice. *s*

i'm impressed that she would even consider you being seen in a place so close to where she has friends. my kids would be horrified if i even considered standing on a corner by their school selling something. add a hot dog costume to that and they would literally die! i'm allowed to eat lunch with them, but i can't do anything "embarrassing"!

God do I relate.. My husband is in the mortgage industry and I was *hitting the other day when there was a chance he was going to lose his job, AGAIN..

I would totally take the hot dog job.. can I use you as a reference? :)

Hmm...wonder if anyone would hire me to stand outside as a hotdog?

(Good luck!)

At least she noticed? Good luck on the job hunt, you're in my prayers.

Sounds like a great job.

Just great.

hahahaha.
hey, at least your kids are looking out for you ;)

ps: i hope you find something!

Having seen my sister dressed up as a giant sandwich on the sidewalk of a very busy street (a memory she seems to have largely repressed by now), I urge you to seek demeaning work elsewhere, if you must seek it at all.

And of course, I hope you find something not demeaning at all.

Coincidentally, I just happened to have seen some very interesting offers in the sidebar of your page that I wanted more information about, and luckily they seemed to offer that information at the mere click of a button! Ain't modern life miraculous?

this is how i got a job in software engineering - don't knock it! i only occasionally have to ask people if they want fries with stuff. they usually do.

LOLOLOL. OMG I totally needed that. Thank you!

Laughing so hard I'm crying.
