Adding Insult To Injury

It's no secret that I am not a good cook. Because the past week has been pretty crazy around here, I haven't made it to the grocery store...which means I've had to get creative at mealtime. I like to call it hodge-podge cooking. I pull together whatever I can to make a nutritious, and usually bland, plate of food.

Yesterday after the funeral, a local church provided lunch for us. When we were finished, the ladies who had prepared the meal tried to insist that my Mom take all the leftovers home.

My Mom replied, "No, it's just me at home. Take it to a shelter or retirement home, because I don't need all this food".

Then my nine year old piped up from across the table and said, "Take it and give it to us! This is the most decent lunch I've had in a long time!"

First, I am so sorry to hear that your Mom's partner passed. You guys have had enough already! I hope your Mom is ok.
Nothing like having a 9 year old letting people think you don't feed her. HOW embarrassing!

sad to hear about your Mom's beau.

and kids will be kids. They will say what they mean. the fact that lunch was good (I am assuming it was good) and said so ain't no big thing.

Now... if lunch actually wasn't very good......

Even though I am on vacation, and banned from the computer....I have been checking in on YOU. I am so sorry that you and your family have suffered anther loss and my heart goes out to all of you. I love that you can see through all of everything that is going on and take your son's constant humor and use that to let the rest of us know.....more hugs to you for that.

oh wait, your nine year old said that...your daughter got sassy this time, not your son! sorry!

kids. gotta love em.

otherwise, what would happen to them?? ;-)

I love how honest your kids are!

Kids! Doncha just love 'em... that's why I got my boy to start cooking on his own. Then I can complain about his cooking.

Sounds like something that would be said to me...ouch.

I am SO with your daughter; not about your cooking, you know, but funeral food is always really, really yummy. I used to volunteer to help serve at funerals at our church, and yeah, it was good to be "of service" but it was way better to actually get to eat there. Joking askide, I AM sorry about your mom's loss, which is also your loss. My heart goes out to you.

I'm sorry for your loss, but glad that you all could find humor in something on such a day. At least she didn't tell everyone specifics about her culinary neglect-- people just assumed she was exaggerating, right?

Your kids crack me up! Seriously!
Again, I'm so sorry for your loss!

I left you a little something a post or two ago...hope it brightens your day a bit.

Blantant honesty is so endearing!

Kids seem to bring levity to just about any situation.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but inside smiling big that your kids and you are still able to find humor in life.

Sad... But what a funny thing to happen during such a sad time! Hugs to you!

It's a little known fact but funeral food is the best tasting, always!

I think it's a grief/stress/relief hormone thingy.

Sorry to hear your mum's partner passed.

Sorry for your loss :( leave it to one of your kids to lighten the mood (because that's what she was doing--she didn't mean that, right;) )

Oh Momo. I am so sorry to hear that your Mom's partner passed. You've really had enough death to last a lifetime lately.

Your daughter stole her brothers thunder with that statement. Gotta love her.

Well, did you take the food?

#1

Oh Momo, I'm sorry to hear that he passed. I wish there were words to say. I'll send hugs though.
Your daughter is funny though. But hey, if you took it, then you don't have to worry about getting to the grocery store for a few more days, right?

Ouch! Out of the mouths of babes...

I'm very sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts.

Oh, that's a rough year for you. I'm so sorry for your losses. It's a punch in the gut for sure.

You know, xbox4nappyrash has a point about funeral food being good for some abstract and unknown reason. Here is to a 'living' rest of year...and good lunches.

Of course, I am sorry to hear about the funeral.

And I'm sorry you're such a sucky cook. Come on over, I'll fatten you up good.

I am so sorry for your loss. It sure sounds like you have had your share of death. hugs to you!

I'm so sorry for your loss and your Mom's. But know that you all will be having fun telling that story on your daughter for the rest of her life, a little laughter mixed with the grieving. It will actually help.

Oh, man. Leave it to the kids to tell it how it is.

why did you follow that with "and it's better than what you're GONNA have for a long time, skinny britches!!!"

i suppose that would just be mean.

i probably shouldn't have said it to my kid as practice.

I think that's why people keep kids around, they can lighten your heart like none other!
;o)

So sorry for your loss. And your kids are seriously the funniest on the planet!

Oh my goodness, LOL ... kids are too honest some times.

OUCH! Sorry to hear of your family's loss...

LOL! I'm joining the Hodge-Podge Cookin' Club - notice my hubby is nicknamed Skinny Ass.

Hey, free food is free food. I'm with your son.

i think my kids might have said the same thing, and i can cook! kids...they say the darndest things!

I bet that supplied a much needed laugh. Still, the punk!

Aww... Maybe your 9-year-old was just being nice to the people who prepared the meal? Complimenting them on how "tasty" it was? [Hey I'm just trying to show a little support here]
