Go Ahead...Make My Day

Within our group of friends we have an odd quirk of quoting movie lines. Okay, truth be told, we have a lot of quirks, but this is the only one I feel comfortable putting on internet display.

These quotes? Well mind you, they’re never anything intellectual, but more of the Fletch, Three Amigos, or Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure variety. We’re deep like that.

The movie's we pull script from may be cheesy, but we take our lines seriously. You aren’t allowed to screw them up.

Once, while urging some friends to hurry, I took a line from Lord of the Rings – Fellowship of the Ring and said, “Run you fools”, when Gandalf’s line is actually, “Fly you fools”. By the looks on their faces, you’d think I had French-kissed my brother.

That was six years ago and they still haven’t let me forget it. They have also taken some liberties and claim I said something like, “Get the lead out you goofballs” or “Trot along you loonies”. This is the grief I’ve endured for being ever so slightly off.

Another friend was chastised for butchering a line from the movie-quote-abundant Dumb and Dumber. What should’ve been, “Big Gulps, huh? Well, see you later came out as, “Big Gulps, huh? Well, gotta go”. Oh, the shame. For the love of coffee! If you’re going be quoting, you have to be closer than that.

The following are movie lines I quote most often.

From Princess Bride:
When sending people on their way
…”Have fun storming the castle!”

From Dirty Dancing:
When my ideas are shot down
…“He wouldn’t know a new idea if it hit him in the Pachenga.” Frequently modified to, “He wouldn’t know a good idea if it hit him in the Pachenga.” I figure that's an allowable modification, since nobody ever knows what I'm talking about.

When I’ve carried a watermelon…“I carried a watermelon.”

When I look around my basement or rummage through my purse…“Such junk…such junk.”

From Dumb and Dumber:
When things aren’t going well or I have a lot to do
…”Our pets’ heads are falling off!”

When I’ll be right back…”Don’t you go dying on me!”

When taking medicine…“Pills are good. Pills are gooooood!”

When I’m beating someone at a game…“You are one pathetic loser. No offense.”

There, now I’ve shared mine. It’s time for you boys and girls to do the same. What is your favorite movie quote? Please share, so that pathetic loser thing doesn’t come back and bite me in the rear.

Bean, before you say it...I know it's "Welp"!
I say this to my kids all the time, after I've fed them, from Happy Gilmore: "Here, eat this, leave me alone!" Hubby and I went to see Happy Gilmore in the theater 6 times together when we were dating so we quote it to each other a lot.

Another one I like to throw out (which requires proper hand gesturing), if I am in pain of any sort, is the line from Tommy Boy where Chris Farley is describing where he got hit in the face by a 2x4. "it's not so much here, or here, but riiight HERE."

PS I gave you major shout outs yesterday Momo!
The Breakfast club-
Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?
We do this all the time too. For example.
Top Gun: "Negative Ghost Rider, That pattern is full" (Whenever the answer is no)
Dirty Dancing: "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" (When trying to get the baby to do anything she doesn't want to do)
Grey's Anatomy: "Seriously. Seriously" (Used WAY TOO MUCH)
and the classic
The Sandlot: "Your killing me Smalls" (Used with only slightly less frequency)
Also - we mis-quote the Blues Brothers all the time.
Thanks for the fun post MomoFali!
there are hundreds of good ones from the movie French sister and I both quote this line the most though...

in a very winey voice " vitamins?!"
I could of drownded Gilbert!

Not a day (hour) goes by that my husband and I don't work in a movie quote, and 98% of them come from Dumb & Dumber and Austin Powers. Couldn't possibly list them all here (there are probably about 50 of them), but some of our favorites are:
"I'll stay here and put out the vibe."
"I took care of it!"
"Shuh, we're in the Rockies."
"I desperately want to make love to a schoolboy."
"I hate goodbyes!"
[forcing myself to stop]
"Sir, you have FIVE."
"That's not my bag, baby."
"Finally those capitalist pigs will pay for their crimes, eh comrades?!"
"Oww! You shot me... in the leg!"
[must. stop. quoting.]
Oh, and how could I forget
"That John Denver is full of shit." D&D
I screamed out loud upon seeing your comment!! I thought, I don't have time to leave a comment right now but I HAVE to shame her for saying it's "Well" and not, "Welp"!!!!!!!
"Whenever I'm about to do something, I think, "Would an idiot do that?" And if they would, I do not do that thing."
- Dwight K. Schrute

"Screws fall out all of the time, the world's an imperfect place."
- Breakfast Club

And Amy, show Dick some respect!!
One line I like to quote too much, and no one ever ever gets it is:

"ha, ha, your Mom's a jailbird!"
Ever seen a grown man naked?
From Titanic: "She is made of iron. I assure you, she will sink." I use this a lot when the kids aren't listening to me because they think I am a stupid idiot who knows nothing. Which is a lot.
Love those quotes....mine hmmmm I'm on the sappy side here but it's have to be Gone with the Wind and "Tomorrow is another day"
Actually I just love every line from that movie....
"Not today, not on Rex Manning Day!"

"Who knows where thoughts come from? They just appear"

"Attention Rex Manning fans, to your left you will notice a shoplifter being chased by night manager, Lucas. This young man will be caught, deep fried in a vat of hot oil and served to our first hundred customers. Just another tasty treat from the gang at Empire Records."

all from Empire Records and I'm stopping myself now before I quote the whole damn thing. I can't believe it's been 13 years since that came out. Something's wrong there.
When silly and distracting someone, I'll toss in "These are not the droids you're looking for."
I (mis)quote from Princess Bride ("Inconceivable!" "I do not think it means what you think it means"), Spaceballs ("Man, we ain't found shit!" "LUDICROUS SPEED!" "That's funny; she doesn't look Druish" "Why didn't somebody tell me my ass was so big?" "I knew it, I'm surrounded by assholes!"), and Kindergarten Cop all the time.
I never get to use it but there's a line from Caddyshack where Chevy's character says to Danny, "Remember Danny a flute with no holes is not a flute but a donut with no hole is a danish."
Probably one of my favorites!

And hey, Nobody puts Baby in a Corner!
The Princess Bride is one of my all time favorite movies!
"'Tis a mere flesh wound."
"Mm-mm...m-m-MOLE!" (whenever the Fox TV anchor with the big mole comes on)
"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something." (when my son says it hurts)
"Do not know privacy" (it's from Flight of the Navigator. Remember, back in the 80's?)
"I'm not even supposed to be here today!" from Clerks (when I'm being pressed into service unwillingly.
"What, like the back of a Volkswagen?" from Mallrats(when someone says something is uncomfortable)
"You'll shoot your eye out kid." from A Christmas Story (when my kid wants something we don't want to give him.
"42" (when my someone says 'guess what' or asks some other rhtorical question)
Oh yeah, and a few I missed

"I would not say such thing if I were you!" - Princess Bride

"But I like da cookie." - Over The Hedge

"Beware the groove, bewaaare the groooove." & "Wrong Leverrr!" - Emperor's Groove

Mama stole my Rex Manning quote.
I say this to my kids ALL the time. They don't even know where the quote came from but now they all say it too:

from The Sandlot
I use movie quotes with my family all the time. My brother is the king-of-all-movie quotes though.
here are mine:
when someone tells me something i don't want to hear:
"you're killing me, smalls" (same as above)
and kinda raunchy:
whenever i see my cats cleaning themselves:
"she lika the way your dick tasstte" (from knocked up)
and the most widely used by all:
when my husband undresses:
"say helloo to my lil friend
my husbands a huge fan of:
whenever he says no:
"negative ghostrider, the pattern is full" (top gun)
that's all i can think of right now. ;o)
Oh Man..I have way too many to quote. But...I have to tell ya...

One day I was driving and bitching about my day, and from the back seat of the car my son interrupts my ranting with the EXACT Dumb & Dumber quote you have here.

I laughed so hard my bad mood left immediately!
i have no idea why, but one of my favorite movie quotes is from notting hill...

and spike says...

i knew a girl at school called pandora. never got to see her box though.

we say this all the time when we talk about going to the mall here. the mall is called panora..rhymes with pandora.

i also like

you're just a bee charmer idgie threadgood. that's what you are. a bee charmer.

said whenever someone is trying to get me to do something.
Every single word uttered in the movie 'Snatch', but they are all vulgar so I'll leave you check them out yourselves!
I always thank people by calling them jack, as in "Thank you, Jack" from POTC. Lots of quotes from that one. Also, in my household it seems that there is a quote from Star Wars that will suit every situation. My 4 yr old niece even says "laugh it up fuzzball". Personally, I don't even LIKE SW, and it kinda gets on my nerves.
We also quote from LOTR and Fight Club frequently. And ahem, I quote Spongebob a lot and my husband, well he sounds dead on Mr Krabbs when he's talking about his "munnie". ("She's spendin' all me munnie!")
'Negative Ghost rider, That pattern is full'

'As you wish'

'Hello, My Name is Inigo Montoya. you killed my father, prepare to die'

'I am looking for the six fingered man'

'The one armed man did it'

You get the idea ;-)
Fun post darlin'.
Momo.. you hit the nail on the head for me.. Princess Bride is the movie I quote all the time. period.
great post. I usually quote Princess Bride when I do quote which isn't very often. I have a horrible memory.
"Frankly, Scarlet, I don't give a damn!"
in our house we have dozens of quotes from lots of films. (meaning dozens from each, not dozens- combined.)
we most often quote:
Fight Club
The Breakfast Club
Any and all Adam Sandler movies
MP & the holy grail
The Princess Bride
and a few others, but these are our regulars...
As for TV, hundreds of times a day we quote The Office... I think, were it not for Dwight Shrute, my husband and I would barely speak to each other at all...
i'm more of an obsessive simpsons / south park quoter, unfortunately.

but i have been known to say "this is my dance space. that's yours. let's cha cha."

"if you can't say something nice, come sit by me!"

"never had ONE lesson"

and really, who HASN'T said "bueller? bueller?"
"I fart in your general direction!" ~Monty Python and the Holy Grail

"Pain, lots of pain." ~A Knight's Tale

"I don't know. It's a mystery." ~Shakespeare in Love
Hi Momo! Funny stuff as always.

I'm with Rachel on...
"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die."

Office Space
"I wouldn't say I've been *missing* it, Bob."

Young Frankenstein
"Please, I beg you! For safety's sake, don't humiliate him! (or her) "

one last favorite.. Stripes
"Any of you homos touch me, and I'll kill you."
The entire script of Arthur. I quote something from it almost every day. The hubs have finally come around and will do the line that follows the one I quote. Now THAT is love!
"I love him sooooooommuuuuuucchh*sob*
-Raising Arizona. (anyone?)
I quote The Godfathers ad nauseum but the one I absolutely love is Big Trouble in Little China.

Everybody relax, I'm here.

Okay, you people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn . . . call the president.

I was born ready.

It's all in the reflexes.

You know what ol' Jack Burton says at a time like this?

I could go on but... ;op
Anything from Princess Bride.

"Why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?" -Nicholas Cage in Con Air
My current most quoted movie line comes when the kids have tromped on my last nerve. it's this: "I'm tryin' Ringo; I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepard." Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction.
O.m.g. My whole family are movie quoter's!! I think the most popular are from Steel Magnolias, Pulp Fiction and any Judd Aptow fo sho.

Mama, my nails are whet! is used more often than I care to admit.
"I bet a dime." (From "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest")- we use it for many references to money.

I use movie quotes all the time-- but mostly those that have been ingrained into my subconscious from endless hours of watching the same videos (over and over and over) with my kids. I can just about quote every line from "Mary Poppins" and "Napoleon Dynamite." It's pretty sweet, I guess.

Most of our quotes are from Forrest Gump or Toy Story, around here.
"You uncultured swine!"
"Oh yeah, Lightbeer? PROVE it!"
"You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity."
"What are you looking at, ya hockey puck?"
And when the kids are driving me nuts I like to say, "Dear God, please make me a bird, so I can fly far, far away from here."
Oh gad. I have bugged my family for years for quoting Star Wars. Now I just do it in my head; I think it's safer that way.

"I got a funny feeling about this..."
Libby Mae Brown, Waiting for Guffman: I been workin' here at the D.Q. for about, um... eight months? Seven? I don't know, somethin' like that, it's fun. Just do the cones... make sundaes, make Blizzards, 'n... put stuff on 'em, 'n... see a lot of people come in, a lot of people come to the D.Q... burgers... ice cream... anything, you know? Cokes... just drive in and get a Coke, if you're thirsty.
We have just finished up softball/t-ball season here so one often quoted line, "Run like the wind Bullseye!" From Toy Story 2.

"You can't handle the truth!"-A Few Good Men

"Toe Pick"-The Cutting Edge

"this is not your room"-Turner & Hooch (Said to the new puppy quite frequently)

"Big Mistake, Big, Huge!"- Pretty Woman

"Just Keep Swimming, just keep swimming.." and "Mine, Mine, Mine, Mine..."-Finding Nemo
There is no possible way I could know where to start. 9/10 of what my husband and I say are direct quotes.

Also, in real life? we'd be BFF's. Just sayin'.
I agree with Mr Lady, this is too vast a subject to condense into a mere blog comment. But your thorough knowledge and quoting of "Dumb and Dumber" is a fantastic place to start. "Petey's head fell off/Yeah, he was pretty old" is one of the greatest one-two punches in cinematic history.

Monty Python is another treasure trove, but the most frequent quick quotes might be "I'm 37" and "I got better".
There is a brit film I love called 'Withnail and I' in which one of the main characters says, "We came on holiday by mistake." It makes me howl, I don't now why.
I thought of a couple more.

" stop rhyming I mean it." "Anybody want a peanut?"

"Julia Gulia. That's funny." "why's that funny" "I don't know"

"s-m-r-t, smart smart smart"
My kids are constantly quoting movies. Even if they have only seen them once.

Like Flushed away...

"Poor, Poor, Rody flushed down in the potty.."
Modified from "The Matrix"
"It's the questions that drive us, Neo..."

(I know, botched...)

Toy Story:
"To Infinity ... and Beyond"

(majorly geeky, I know...)

Star Wars:
"You were the chosen one..."
(yeah...even moreso)

This could give me carpal tunnel syndrome, so I'll just give you a few from my all time favorite: "Fandango"

"Innocent critters squashed on the highway of life."

"It's ok Phillip; your parents are from Jersey, they've seen butt's before."

"You sold your car to throw a party? But you didn't even graduate!"

Girl: "Then she had to have her Utopian tubes tied."
Gardner: "I think you mean Fallopian, darlin'"
Girl: "No, silly! Them's books of the bible! You know, 1st & 2nd Fallopians?"
"Nobody puts Baby in the corner" is my all-time favorite quote, with "Very hot! Very hot!" and "Donga need food!" from Sixteen Candles running a close second!
'Hello, My Name is Inigo Montoya. you killed my father, prepare to die' -Princess Bride

"It hurts here...not here..., but here." -Tommy Boy after being hit in the head by a 2x4.

"It's just a flesh Wound!"

I could go on for days. We are CONSTANTLY quoting movies.

now walks around saying "I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready" - SpongeBob
Our family favorite (not just me, hubby and kids, but inlaws too!) is "Inconceivable!" from Princess Bride of course.
itsa tv one. Newsradio, anybody remember it besides the hubs and I?
Phil Hartman(as Bill): Your last name's Guerelli?
Also throwing in the "wat up" line often.
Can't recall movie ones, probably so much part of our lives that we've forgotten that it's from a movie.
I'll have to get back to you. Cute post btw.
My husband and I do a lot of the ones listed here already, but we also do two from tv.

1. "I learned something today, Kyle." (South Park)

2. "It's the right thing to do and a tasty way to do it." (Wilford Brimley, Quaker Oats commercial)

The second one is best used in situations where "tasty way to do it" makes your stomach turn a little bit.
We do this all the time too. One of my favourites -- for when the kids pass gas! -- is "Nice tootin' Tex," which is a modification of "Nice shootin' Tex" from Ghostbusters.

They like to say it to me now. I taught them everything they know!
My favorite quote of recent? From Kung Fu Panda: "There's no charge for awesomeness, or attractiveness"
I often quote Stand By Me (and oddly enough just bought it and watched it again). My husband and I often quote Pulp Fiction, too. Great post, Mo!
since i haven't seen a movie in English since 1994 (help) I only quote Monty Python which I committed to memory in high school.

(when son wants something and there is no way I am going to cook it) "awwww the cat's eatin' it"

"I'm not a witch. I'm not a witch."

"This is not an argument. It's just a contradiction."

"A little fermented curd will do the trick."

when someone says "how do you know?" "It's tattooed on the back of his neck."

"Call the Church Police!" (for any ethical or moral infraction :)

I used to do more, but these are the staples and then the kids' shows are providing fresh material.

modified from Ice Age when 1-year-old is doing a new trick:
"She's on the verge of an evolutionary breakthrough!"
'Frankly my dear I don't give a damn' is one the missus often hears.

Though film I most often quote is Withnail and I - much to the constination of people who haven't seen it.

When engaged in a pointless arguement I will say - 'don't threaten me with a dead fish.'

Or when speaking with soldiers who have served in Ireland, I will say - 'Ah a crack at the Mick hey!' - which is thoroughly politiically incorrect these days.

And I do secretly dream of going into a twee cafe and declaring - 'I want the finest cakes known to humanity, and I want then here and I want them now'
when I worked at the prison, we quoted Forest Gump on a daily basis. We never thought it was odd LOL

When I don't like the activity my kids are engaged in, from Close Encounters: "The only bad air out here is you guys fartin' around!"
Frankly darling, if I had the chance again I wouldn't have had children.

Bridget Jones Diary. The mum says it... Heh. And now I get mileage out of it.
Why is it that I hit a brick wall whenever you ask us for stories or personal responses? I mean, I quote things all the time, but when you actually ask? I draw a blank. Let's see what I can do here...

"Seriously" (Grey's Anatomy)

"...much?" (adapted from Buffy the Vampire Slayer...we quote Buffy a lot, and use Buffy-speak in many situations)

Umm...yeah, that's as much as I'm getting out of that blank. I'll try to start paying attention to me when I talk. ;)
