I Almost Had An Achy Breaky Heart

Last night we surprised our daughter with Hanna Montana tickets. It was an early birthday present that we thought she would love. For anyone without a pre-teen daughter, Hanna’s real name is Miley Cyrus…as in Billy Ray’s daughter. Now, if you had asked me ten years ago if I would ever go to a concert with the name Cyrus on the ticket, I would’ve told you absolutely not. As a matter of fact, when my husband and I got married back in 1997, we specifically told the DJ that Achy Breaky Heart was NOT to be played.

But, our daughter LOVES this Cyrus kid. So we were pretty surprised with she opened her present and just sat there and smiled. No yelling? No jumping? No bouncing off the walls? WHAT? Because, when I wasn’t much older than her and I got Jack Wagner tickets…well, I was a mini-maniac. And, when he touched my hand at the concert...sigh...I vowed to never wash it again.

But, our kid was calm and we just sat there looking at her, asking if she was happy. Prodding her to at least pretend to be thrilled. I gotta tell you, I was a bit disappointed.

When I took a phone call a couple of minutes later, she was still just sitting there. But, slowly it hit her, and I looked over to see her eyes welling up with tears. Then she took a pillow, put it over her face and screamed. Soon she was jumping around the room, giving me and her Dad alternating hugs, with, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” in between. She ran upstairs, tried on an outfit for the concert, then hugged her Hanna Montana poster.

What a relief that was. I can’t tell you how happy I was to see her acting like a hysterical fool.

This I completely understand. (and am jealous. I would kill for a show to be near us.)
My daughter, with the best presents, sits there and says a quiet "thank you" and goes on to open the next one. There is no excitement or thrill. EVER. No matter how badly she wanted it. DRIVES. Me. INSANE!!!!
"Stunned Disbelief" I recall experiencing the same feeling October 27, 2004.
Oh, I understand.
I'm still the child...I just had the same reaction when my husband emailed to tell me that he scored tickets for the Patriots game against the Jets this Sunday...4 tickets, with free food and drinks in the hospitality tent prior to the was delayed giddiness...took a bit to get excited. Definitely don't mistake it for lack of excitement;)

Oh, and here's my link since the workaround within the whole "nickname" isn't creating a link (grrr!):
I get really shy when it comes to opening presents, and have weird anxiety about it. haha. I never get that OMG OMG OMG excitment, even if I REALLY love the present. I think it's just people looking at me, and then thinking "oh, I don't look happy enough". I'm always telling my mom "I really do love it!"
How cool is that... I hope she has a great time at the concert.
Ahh, that's great. I have a 10 year old and I am sure she would of loved those tickets. :)
That is so cute!
That's so cool for her! Hannah Montana is a huge deal for kids that age. I am laughing at your achy breaky comment!
What? A pre-teen that shows an emotion? A positive encouraging emotion? I didn't think they existed.

I have a 12 year old daughter (13 in Febrauary) and we are so in the emotionless stage. It drives me nuts.

Good for you and her! She'll have a blast at the show.

Chuck @ D is for Dad
aawww!!! She must have been in SHOCK wondering if it was REAL, thus her delayed reaction.

I just hate when my son doesn't FLIP out when I thought I had gotten him the greatest gift.

Good Job!
So sweet! She didn't realize that Miley Cyrus WAS Hannah Montanna! I could totally see my daughter doing this, if I could keep it a secret long enough to suprise her. I'm the worst about that.
Good job, mom!
MY youngest (well, my oldest, too) is all about High School Musical... at age nine, she hasn't quite taken to Miley-mania yet.

The tickets here in DC are hard to come by and have been scalped in the $1,000 plus range.

I hope you all have a good time!
That is truly hilarious. They need to know we parents only get them stuff for the insane screaming...makes it all worthwhile!

Principled Discovery
Priceless... to render a child speechless is a feat not easily achieved. You guys did good!
what a wonderful feeling to really truly just make her day, week, year! congrats!
Wow-you really scored with that one! (Even if she didn't show it at first!) My daughter would KILL to see Miley Cyrus in person!
hahaha so cool. ...Achy breaky heart was one of my favorites as a kid. Don't hold it against me though. I was a kid in Texas, it couldn't be avoided. the heck did you get those tickets?! You DOG! Your daughter is the luckiest preteen! Around here, they sold out in about four minutes! I'm so, so happy for your daughter (and for you, too). That's something she'll remember forever (you know, kinda like your Jack Wagner experience)!
That's awesome. A reaction like that is totally worth it!
that reaction makes everything ever in life feel worthwhile!
how'd ya score those tix???
that's a hot item!
HM blows sunshine out her butt. She must. I paid 30 bucks for her double cd!
My daughter would LOVE to go see Hannah Montana...I'm not sure her reaction would be delayed. :)

Ah, Jack Wagner AKA Frisco Jones. That's a blast from the past. I used to belt out "All I Need" with Jack. That was TMI, wasn't it? Sorry. hehe
