I Hear That Train a Comin'

Exactly three weeks from right now I will be on my way to New York City. By myself. On a train.

I will have nine hours to do as I like. I can listen to music, get a drink from the dining car and write. I can even read a book without interruption. Gasp!

Maybe the clickety-clacking will sing me to sleep. Though, I hear the scenery is beautiful on this trip. I may not want to miss it.

I am thrilled for the opportunity to travel through small towns and end up in one of the biggest cities in the world. From the mid-west to the east coast. From apple orchards to the Big...well, you get the idea.

As much as I would love to share this ride with my family (my son would likely explode due to overwhelming joy) I am excited to have an extended amount of time to decompress and relax. I picture myself leaning against the window and watching the hills roll by. Sigh...

And, so help me, if there is a talker sitting next to me I'm going to have to throw them off the train.

  1. That sounds awesome! I have always wanted to travel by train. What made you decide to go this route rather than airplane or car?

  2. I have only taken trains while in Europe, would like to in the States sometime. It sounds like fun! You will definitely be able to decompress and relax, but it will more than likely be short lived as you will miss the family.

Wishing you a safe and fun trip!

  3. Driving takes roughly the same amount of time (if you don't hit a bunch of tunnel traffic) and it costs $58 a day to park at the hotel. My car probably wouldn't have made it anyway!

I also hate to fly. Not to mention, it cost about $300 less than an airline ticket! I can take up to three checked bags at no cost.

  4. I absolutely LOVE taking the train! I have taken it from NC to NYC twice and from NC to FL once. It is so relaxing and fun! I would have done it this time if I had the time. You will have a blast! 3 WEEKS!??! AHH! I can't wait!

  5. Maybe you'll get to share a berth with Cary Grant like in North by Northwest. Maybe not. He has been dead for 20 odd years.

Enjoy the leisure of Amtrak. Are you rolling into Grand Central or Penn?

  11. I'm taking a train there, too :)

Although my ride is only about 4 hours. It takes a little more than that to drive, but I wanted time to relax going to and from. I'm really looking forward to it!

  13. 10 bucks says you'll remember your train ride with more fondness when you're 80 than NY.

Seriously, I'm looking you up in 50years. You better have cash in hand!

ps. I HATE that I'm not going to be there with you.

  14. Wheeeeee! You're gonna have a blast on that train. The best part is, if you feel drowsy, you can let the movement and sound lull you to sleep for a few minutes or a couple of hours. Sounds delightful!

  17. I used to hate the idea of that much time in travel. Then I had children. And nine hours to sit and do and read and just be??? Priceless.

See you in the Big A, freak!

  18. sounds like an adventure! I'm excited for you an a tad jealous. I've never travelled by train, and there's not enough Jack Daniels to get me on a plane since 9-11!

And feel free to throw mamma from the train, if she's a talkin'!

    UP

  19. I traveled overnight once on a train with my husband to Raleigh, NC. It can be absolutely breathtaking and quiet. I was lucky. We booked a private room, so I could hide away from any chatty people. Have a lot of fun in The Big Apple!
